Hey all -
does anyone know how to find the train schedule for Moffat tunnel (East portal)?
The train makes a really loud signal, when coing out, and being near the end when this happens makes my ears hurt for a week (no exaggeration).
Thanks - happy sunday,
mountainute

Re: Moffat tunnel - East portal - Train schedule
Amtrak is probably twice a day--one train in each direction--so it's mostly freight that goes through that tunnel, unless there's the ski train.
Amtrak is pretty easy to find out but I don't know if freight schedules are posted anywhere that's publicly available.

Re: Moffat tunnel - East portal - Train schedule
The Moffat Tunnel sees 4-6 regularly scheduled trains, and several trains that run as needed... Expect about 1-5 coal trains (loaded or empty, loads eastbound, empties westbound) within 1-2 weeks. (Oil is similar, also loads eastbound and empties westbound)
These as needed trains usually are ran by Union Pacific, but sometimes BNSF will run them
For the regularly scheduled trains...
Freight:
Union Pacific MGJNY- Grand Junction, CO to Denver, CO mixed freight. Runs east usually around noon-ish (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)
Union Pacific MNYGJ- Denver, CO to Grand Junction, CO mixed freight. Runs west usually pre dawn (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)
BNSF HPVODEN- Provo, UT to Denver, CO mixed freight. Runs east usually in the late mornings to early afternoons. (Daily)
BNSF HDENPVO- Denver, CO to Provo, UT mixed freight. Runs west usually in the mornings. (Daily)
Occasional reroutes could happen as well.
Amtrak often holds freight trains up for a couple of hours, so expect any freight movements a couple hours before or after Amtrak.
Amtrak trains:
5- Westbound California Zephyr (Late mornings, Daily)
6- Eastbound California Zephyr (Evening, Daily)
Hope this helps!

might just carry some $2 earplugs with you for the end of the trail?
