Unexpected

Post by Wentzl »

Every once in a while you come across something unexpected while hiking. This thread is my attempt to create a gallery of interesting and unusual things folks have encountered on the 14ers. To get the ball rolling, here is what I saw yesterday coming down from the summit of Handies.

Commitment! How long of a hike in is it to that water? Also, why the hell not just carry something inflatable? So many questions...

Saw this at the bottom of Mizzo on Friday. The uncooperative. The unpredictable. The notorious Gerald Weinstein.

This is the oddest thing I've seen in the mountains (so far):

Great topic- I came accross an unmarked gravesite once. That was extremely sobering.

And after finishing a different hike. I found a wimpering older dog with tags at a large trailhead. Called the owner only to have an awkward conversation while his grandson (30minutes) made his way back to the trail. I'll never forget the look on his face when reuniting them and being able to end the phone conversation.

'But my dog is always so good off leash' ya
You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.

If it ever happens, hustling down a 14er standard route at noon as clouds are rolling in and NOT seeing 50+ people making very slow progress to the top will take the cake.

No photos, but:
1. The "Pissing Rock" near Twin Lakes in Chicago Basin. Water coming straight out of a tiny hole on the side of a boulder.
2. The SUV abandoned along the trail approaching the summit of Mt. Bross. Wondering how it was ever removed...
Bad decisions often make good stories.

Just to clarify, the photo to kick off this topic, the guy was carrying the full size aluminum canoe DOWN from the summit of Handies. He hiked past the lake and then put in on the way out!

I did ask why. Just for fun!

Marmot wrestling on the trail to White Mountain, CA. Started out on hind legs Sumo style, than wrapped their legs around each other and rolled around on the ground like a fat ball of fur. More playful than hostile.

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters." - Norman Maclean

For the curious, get your water from the lake, pissing rock water has a very metallic taste, yuck.

Most surprising and shocking, a pine marten killing a marmot. Holy crap!
