Best route with names

Post by Gandalf69 »

What is the best route with names for the landmarks? Longs has the "home stretch", the "keyhole", etc. Capitol has "k2", the "knife edge", and so on. Mt Evans has the "sawtooth" close by. Any other catchy names on mountains out there?

The original Heckmair route on the north face of the Eiger has many named features/landmarks, the coolest of which (I think) is The Traverse of the Gods.

I don't remember where, but I've seen the hourglass referred to instead as the bowling alley. I haven't been up there personally but am surprised that hasn't caught on a bit more given the reputation of the place.

The most memorable one that I've personally experienced was "Fiascol", Roach's nickname for the saddle between Frasco and Casco. Nasty, loose scree and talus leading up to it.

i'm glad you mentioned this one, Jim. i was looking at a topo for the area earlier this year and wondered if there was an alternate route up that saddle where the lines were a little more spaced out. upon learning it's name i decided i'd pass on the alternate. glad to hear it lives up to the hype.

amen brother. The Mordwand has the best assembly of section names.

Any time someone mentions:

The White Spider,

the Hinterstoisser Traverse,

The Traverse of the Gods,

and of course Death Bivouac.....the hair raises and the imagination soars....

hmmm....time to pick up Heinrich Harrer's The White Spider....the stoke is rising.....
