Awesome and Thanks!

First of all, congratulations to billyg0atgruff for finishing the Colorado 14ers. It’s definitely more difficult to complete them from out-of-state. Also, thanks to Tom, Ricky, and Vadim for the shoutout.

J.H. Gaines (#371 on CMC’s master list of 14er finishers) is a Texan who completed the 14ers in August 1986 with an ascent of Wetterhorn Peak. His first 14er was Mt. Elbert in August 1979, and he’s the first person I know who completed the 14ers while living in Texas. (Fun fact: J.H. Gaines was one of my dad’s graduate students at the University of Texas.)

Tim Cooney of the Climbing Cooneys (https://www.climb13ers.com/colorado-13ers/ ) is originally from Lake Jackson, Texas and climbed his first 14er (Snowmass Mtn.) in June 1975. Tim finished the 14ers in August 1986 with an ascent of Wetterhorn Peak. Tim is #292 on CMC’s master list of 14er finishers. However, I believe Tim did all of his climbs after he moved to Colorado. Tim and his wife Carrie completed all of the 13ers on 8/3/2013.

My dad, Larry Mack (https://www.listsofjohn.com/m/LarryMack ), and I completed the 14ers with Crestone Peak on 8/18/1987 and the centennials with Grizzly Peak on 8/5/1992. We did our climbs from Austin on vacation. I later had another tour of duty on the 14ers with my sons, David and Randy.

Randy completed the bicentennials on 9/4/2020 (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=58927#p720970 ) but did 102 bicentennial peaks when we lived in Austin and the remaining 100 after we moved to Colorado in October 2014.
Thanks! Yours is a fun story! I enjoyed piecing it together. I had found your Dad’s obituary after I got the tip on this post.

My permanent address was in Texas, and I'm definitely a Texan, though it was only by working a summer job in Colorado a few years that gave me the access to finish them.
So I definitely didn't put in the commitment that some people on this forum did, but I would consider myself a Texan finisher.

On comments about Texans, I've definitely heard them from time to time, but I always took it as Texans just being a kind of placeholder to take the brunt of any complaints that a Coloradoan might have, rather than a personal attack.
I live in Utah now, and we speak the same way about Californians here. Not that we actually dislike Californians, it's just easy to have someone to blame anything you don't like on. I think that's Texas for most people in Colorado.
Thanks! Yeah, it used to bother me more, now it only bothers me when they track though the middle of camp after midnight kicking things cussing about us. That seemed kind of personal.
