Last minute planning for overnight hike this weekend

Post by Boesman »

Hi all,

Some other plans fell through, and I am starting from scratch. I am based in Silverthorn and looking for a hike to keep me busy this weekend.

Basic requirements:
-Not too far from Silverthorn, I'd prefer to not have to drive more than 90min.
-I want to be able to camp on Friday night. Either BLM, a campsite, or on a wilderness trail
-hike all day Saturday. Camp Saturday night (preferably somewhere west-facing so that I can enjoy the sunset)
-Hike out back to car on Sunday
-Preferably a loop as opposed to an out-and-back.

I am a very experienced hiker/backpacker, but don't know the area very well. Any insights about camping restrictions and weather would be great.

Happy Days!

Look at Red Peak and Mt Silverthorne in the Gore. Super close to where you are and great places to camp.

Thanks!

What's the best way to figure out where I may/may-not camp?

I'm also looking at Eagle's Nest Summit Loop:

But really worried about the bugs - any insights on how bad it will be?

We hiked Red on July 4th. Bugs were not to bad.
