Re: 5-day route in Winds in late July?
We just got out of a 5 night 6 day in the Wind. However, we went in at the southern edge at Big Sandy Trailhead. Originally we were heading to Elkhart but there were two many unknowns with the conditions and we got excellent info on conditions at Big Sandy for which we were thankful. The trip was snow free all the way to Pyramid Lake although there was high water there and throughout our trip and Creek crossings are do able everywhere (still there was thigh deep water in some areas fast but do able). The lakes are gorgeous with breathtaking senery. There are a lot of patchy snow in many places 5-6 feet deep but off trail. We did summit one peak there called Bernard a class two maybe three scramble at the top of a pass/ saddle called Washakie. It was windy as hell (had to be sustained at 50-55 mph). The peak next to Bernard , Washakie, is do able from the saddle and a class 3-4 but we didn't do it (cold). All passes are open, low census of hikers. I highly recommend this area . Lots of beautiful camp spots. Only bad was the bugs. Bring Deet and a net

Nice. It is an excellent destination. I've done 5 backpacking/mountaineering trips out of Big Sandy and all have been memorable.
When life gets you down, climb!
