Tourist Creek Route on Gannett Peak

Post by Exflatlander »

Has anyone done this route on Gannett Peak? The approach is not easy but avoids much of the glacier travel. I have plenty of experience on class 4 terrain but have no technical climbing skills. I am kind of curious to know how sustained the class 4 section since I will be solo. The only gear I have is crampons and an ice axe. There is a good chance I might wait until next year to try this route.

I did. AWESOME route! Imho, this will be the standard route in the future. My buddy and I did it in 2 days, 1 night. Probably the best mountaineering experience I have had. All we brought was pons/axe as well. Huge workout though. I think it was 44 miles in 2 days. Feel free to contact me to discuss further but I felt the class 4 section was pretty tame. (although, I"m confident leading up to mid class 5) Also, here is my TR from our trip:

I've done Tourist Creek and also Wells Creek. Previous poster's TR pretty much covers it, especially about the rock hopping! Actually, I can't imagine schlepping much of a pack up there. Also, I am surprised that their GPS showed 44 miles RT, felt much shorter to me. I recall running back to the car after crossing back over the Green River in about 1:45, so it can't be more than 12 miles or so to that point. Anyway, I wrote a description of the route: https://www.summitpost.org/tourist-creek/536366 and a brief trip report is here: https://fastestknowntime.com/fkt/peter- ... 2009-08-01

Wells Creek is definitely harder in terms of technical climbing.

Thanks for the beta and for the links to the trip reports. From what I read it looked like half the climbers used a rope on the last section but it sounds like that is unnecessary.

Can you camp at Skinny Lake or is the closest spot to camp to the summit between Scott and Skinny Lakes? Is the class 4 section a few hundred feet or closer to a thousand? I have seen multiple trip reports give a wide variety of descriptions. I might try to summit on the second day and then spend a couple of additional nights to do Desolation/Flagstone if I can carry enough food. Thanks.

We saw two guys camped right before skinny as you head up. Probably a few small spots around there towards minor.

The class 4 section is broken up and mixed with cl 3. Maybe a few hundred feet. Moves were on solid rock and easier than the needle from travese. *Notice where you top out as that could be confusing on descent. Saw some webbing but downclimbed before that.

Go as light as possible. I think our bags weighed just over 25 lbs for this one night adventure and its a beater. Let me know how it goes.

Good luck.

Thanks for the beta and I summitted Gannett a week ago from this padt Sunday. The crux was getting through Tourist Creek with a full pack as I overpacked (although I forgot my stove). I passed a party of four climbers who were on there way back from Gannett as a day trip. I thought the class 4 section was fairly easy and not too exposed. Crampons and an ice axe were definitely helpful. I ended up camping two nights with one at the south end of Skinny Lake and the other at lake above 11,000'.
