Things to see between Denver and Mt Sunflower

Post by Paula »

Looking for ideas for a small detour or two between Denver and Mt Sunflower. Unfortunately, the carousel, Wonder Tower and the creepy clown museum all closed down a few years ago and the ball of twine in Cawker is too far out of the way.

Paula,

After many years of trips across eastern CO/western KS on I70, I can attest that there is nothing worth stopping for.

Sorry.

Ricky, I know it's gonna be bleak, but even a semi interesting truck stop or rest stop is better than nothing. A forum member here is how we found out about the Love's in Nebraska that inexplicably sells viking helmets. Hikers know weird and fun things!

Barnold, I'll check that out. Thanks!

Are you going to a MAGA rally or something? 😉

Well. There’s the rest area at the Arriba exit.

Sunflower is a fun visit for its quirky humor and to make my trip worthwhile I rode my bike around here: https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/701941 ... loop-trail
If you aren't a biker it is a nice hike too. Kansas actually has hills!

The burgeoning metropolis of Burlington has a really good restaurant with a decent beer selection.
You're gonna be ravenous after this climb. Highly recommended.
Edit: It's not exactly between Denver and Sunflower, but ChrisinAz and I did Colorado's lowest ranked peak, Two Buttes, on the same day as Sunflower.

Give a visit to Lawrence if you haven't already, it's nice and hilly. Also, the Flint Hills. There's a big gravel bike race out there every year.

I agree that I-70 is not the best, but that grand entrance on route 50 and 10 through Walsenburg is mighty pretty. Even better with the good playlist. :YY

Limon is fun. They hate Denvernites, so it makes for pretty interesting exchanges with locals. Also they get pissed when you call their city lee-mown.
