Hi. I'm planning to climb Granite Peak in Montana this coming August via the Sky Top Creek/Southwest Ramp approach. We're currently targeting a summit day of 14 August. Is anyone else on this forum planning to climb Granite this summer? If so, I'd like to compare notes and share information such as route conditions.

Nice! On snow, I'm guessing you'll be taking one of the more traditional routes via Froze To Death. I'll appreciate hearing about the snow conditions when you return. Be safe and have a great trip!

This isn't exactly first-hand information, but two summers ago in mid-August we set out to climb Granite via this same route, but were dissuaded by a returning party that reported what sounded like very sketchy/dangerous conditions, with steep, hard ice lower in the gully that forces you to spend considerable time exposed to rockfall from higher up. We ended up doing an extended off-trail backpacking loop instead, and had a great time. Summit or not, the Beartooths are really an incredible place. I do want to come back to Granite at some point via the standard route, we'll see if it works out this summer. Happy to report back if it happens.

I plan on doing a Southwest ramp via Lady of the Lakes / Aero Lake approach. Obviously taking crampons and axe with me, though hopefully not needing them.

AlexeyD - thanks for the report. I have heard the crux are can be icy in mid-August. We plan to bring some protection.

Ptglhs - I'll be particularly interested in your report of the two class 4-ish crux steps and the condition of the fixed line I've read about. Good luck!

Anton Krupicka ran/climbed Granite Peak on July 16. His report and photos are on Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/5639005788.

Here's a Peakbagger TR from a 30 July 21 guided climb of Granite Peak from the northeast. I'm still looking for recent beta on the southwest ramp approach from the south.
