Catalytic Converter stolen in Eagle County
Last Saturday, I hiked West Deming and parked off of Westbound I-70 from the west side of Vail Pass. This strava track pinpoints the details of where I was,
https://www.strava.com/activities/4303609126. Somewhere between
6:45am and 11:15am, the catalytic converter was removed from my 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
Take care when you park your vehicle in an easy to access spot like a major highway. Maybe if I concealed my vehicle better, this incident wouldn't have
occurred.
Here's a pic of the missing part:
EDIT: Oops, I was in Eagle County, not Summit County. Guess I crossed over when I went over Vail Pass, but then the summit was on the border of Eagle/Summit.

Thanks for the warning! I should add that there have been a rash of vehicle thefts along I-70 corridor mountain towns as well. 5 on last Saturday in Eagle County. Maybe the same people who took your catalytic converter? Not sure who you reported it to, but get in touch with Eagle County Sheriff. https://www.eaglecounty.us/Sheriff/

Note that we were parked at Pitkin Creek TH Saturday and had no issues, did see Vail Police swing through the parking lot. Lots of townhomes right there too with easy access to the exit so I think they are keeping an eye on those types of areas.

That totally sucks, sorry to hear that. I know 10-15 years ago when I was on the east coast so many were getting stolen. The scrap yard was required to take your drivers license to pay you out, so they had a record of who it came from. It really cut down the number of stolen ones.

Damn!
Reminds me of a story from an old co-worker where one day after getting ready for work in the morning he discovered that his drive shaft had been stolen from his vehicle right in his driveway. The whole driveshaft...
May have been in Aurora a decade or two ago but I'm probably misremembering the location he said it happened at.

12ers,
That sucks but I feel your pain. We had one stolen from a vehicle a few months ago while it was parked in the lot of a vehicle repair place.
I think you are right about proximity to a highway. This place is within sight distance of a state highway in Raytown.

Friend of mine had his cut/stolen from a Honda Element in the Sam’s Club parking lot (where he works) a few months ago. Pretty brazen.

Thanks. I sent the Eagle County sheriff's office an email and let them know what my phone number was if they need more info.
Hopefully, spreading the word helps in some small way.

Re: Catalytic Converter stolen in Summit County
One of the metals used in CC's is palladium. I bought some once for roughly 300 dollars and ounce and sold it a little over a year later for 500 some, thought me a pretty clever guy.
Right now it goes for a kings ransom. A few years back it started climbing and has stayed around the $2,200. For scale, gold has never been that high. Can see why thieves would be tempted.
Ill gotten gain has no value if that makes things any better.
