Proponents of summer microspikes: are you wearing stiff boots, or a shoe with a flexible midsole, and a grippy outsole that has a chunky tread? I feel there's a reinventing of hobnail boots going on.
just my regular hikers with a flexible midsole, fairly aggressive tread. i only put them on for going *down* steep and loose dirt.
I use them going both up and down the steep, loose dirt/scree. I've found I can significantly outpace others that way (both up and down) and, while they're chewing up the trail by knocking dirt/rock all over, I can go up and down not only quicker but without hardly displacing anything - thus much less erosion/damage to the trail.
