Re: Animals Signaling You?
There's a heron that often lands across the stream while I fish, then just stands there staring at me. Unfortunately that water is strictly catch-and-release and I am a law-abiding citizen, but I would certainly love to feed that guy if circumstances were different.
Red-tailed hawk attacked me after he figured out that I was too close to the nest. That was completely stealth attack, dive bombing at my head from behind and immediately retreating before I even saw him/her. I am proud to say that the bird nest was already the third explanation that came into my mind while I was standing there with slight concussion, bleeding from my scalp, trying to figure out what just happened. First two being tiny meteorite and some kind of electrical discharge, like small ball lightning. Only after I went through those crazy scenarios, I started looking at nearby trees and finally saw the nest with mean bird staring me down.
Also noticed that Colorado squirrels are surprisingly tense, they often make noises and trow stuff when I'm near their nest. Mid-Atlantic squirrels are totally cool though, probably so used to people that they don't care at all.

Reminds me of a cute chipmunk who really had their shtick down. I.kept trying to feed the other one and gave them about half my bar! One of the fattest I've ever seenChicago Transplant wrote: ↑Thu Dec 02, 2021 1:55 pmMaybe they were following us hoping we would drop some food scraps for themAbove_Treeline wrote: ↑Thu Dec 02, 2021 1:25 pmMaybe, I do think one ran ahead of me on the trail though, possibly relating to me. Maybe it was different one that posed but at least a couple of them seemed kinda friendly. I remember one not friendly though seemed to be more screaming across the valley. Kinda like people, some make noise , some not so niceChicago Transplant wrote: ↑Thu Dec 02, 2021 11:05 am
After he posed there he ran off past the route, I think he was just going that way and was probably more annoyed with us that we kept going the same direction. It was a great photo op though, I hadn't been able to photograph a marmot standing before.
I support reintroducing grizzlies and wolves to their historic ranges.

Wow I actually worried about that before. Guess I wasn't paranoid after all. Doesn't sound fun for sure. That actually sounds kinda badcedica wrote: ↑Thu Dec 02, 2021 5:48 pm There's a heron that often lands across the stream while I fish, then just stands there staring at me. Definitely fed herons at the Gulf. Catfish and maybe ladyfish? Maybe blues too?

Re: Animals Signaling You?
Horton the Quandary dog led us up to the summit. It was our second 14 and I was thinking seeing a dog running up and down at 14,000 ft was incredible.
Years ago in RMNP a large female elk charged me from a quarter mile away, stopped 10 ft away kicking the dirt and making horse-like noises, got between me and the rest of the trail, giving me a good scare....and low and behold there was a fairly newborn baby elk hiding in the grass a little ways up.
