Pawnee Pass Conditions

Post by Ben »

I had been planning a Pawnee-Buchanan Pass loop run this week. The forest service posted that a rock slide had affected the upper portions of the trail on the west side of Pawnee Pass last week. Anyone been up there since then? Any info on if there are any trail repairs planned (would not want to be up there with active trail work)? Any info appreciated.

Was up there yesterday (Buchanan to Pawnee, CCW) and the rock slide is very overblown. That section is always washed out and a boulder field, and it didn't really look any different. Be prepared for a washed out trail and to do a little rock hopping for a few switchbacks and you'll be fine.
Me fail English? That's unpossible. http://www.ericjlee.com/Blogs

Thanks for the update! This is kind of what I figured, but never having been up there I wanted to make sure I wasn’t in for a shock.

I came across this thread before heading up this weekend to do the P-B loop. Experienced Pawnee Pass first-hand (ascending the west side), with a 35-pound pack, and I agree it wasn't bad. No worse than rock-hopping on small boulders at the top of some 14ers. Just takes some creative route-finding. My suspicion is that the rocks have stabilized quite a bit in the week-plus since the slide happened, but some are still quite wobbly/slidey. Try to stay off the exposed sand where others have slid.

I posted a couple pics here:
