Would it be nice to have Sunlight Spire be considered a 14'er?

Yes! It would be nice if one of the 14'ers required technical climbing, and make completion of the 14ers more meaningful!

Yes, because if some list include North Maroon and El Diente, Sunlight should be included.

15%
No, because it would make climbing the 14'ers too hard for most people.
23
6%
No, because the 300 feet rule should be set in stone, and eliminates other peaks such as North Maroon and El Diente as well.

I really don't care either way.

CheapCigarMan wrote: Sat Mar 06, 2021 9:55 am To agree with a couple of other folks on here. The Spire is a high point / bump on a ridge. What makes the Spire be considered a 14'er or mountain, when there are so many other high points / bumps out there?
Back when this thread was started, Sunlight Spire's elevation was bumped up from 13,995 feet to 14,000 feet. It might be a bump on the ridge, but so are some other points (North Maroon, Conundrum, Cameron, and El Diente) that are sometimes counted as 14ers. It was the USGS change in elevation (NAVD88 vs. NGVS29) that brought up the question.

With sunlight spire clocking in at exactly 14000’ currently, does anyone have an educated guess whether it will again fall below that mark with the new 2022 geoid?

Ten years later, it still has the same official significance as "South Wilson," "East Crestone," etc. and less than "North Massive."
The poll seems to be missing an option.

Were it to somehow make the 14ers, this wouldn't increase the difficulty of completing the list any more than would humping a harness and ascenders into Chi Basin. But can you imagine the bottleneck of masses waiting to jug on up? Free ascents would become pretty rare--hard to concentrate with 100 people yelling for you to get out the way of the fixed lines.

DaveLanders wrote: Sat Mar 06, 2021 9:16 pm Sunlight Spire is not officially named. Names are on the USGS quads if they are official names determined by the US Board of Geographic Names. Since the current policy is to not give new names to unnamed peaks in wilderness areas, Sunlight Spire is unlikely to be officially named anytime soon. The recent naming of Fowler and Boskoff peaks is a rare exception to this policy
Absolutely, I was way off. It's on no USGS or USFS maps and a search here only returns Sunlight Pk https://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=138:1::::::

Now I am really curious as to Cigars question about wtf is the reason for choosing a random bump on a map as worthy of inclusion in the "Unofficial"/"Unranked"/"Subsummit" category over others?

My best guess now is that it's to keep dorks like myself busy while allowing others to laugh at those of us pontificating such inconsequential details :)
