NatDog wrote: Tue Sep 08, 2020 6:34 pm The Sawtooth Ridge from Bierstadt to Evans was my first class 3 hike and I thought it was pretty mellow, especially in terms of exposure. I haven't yet done Kelso Ridge or Wetterhorn but my understanding is that those are a bit more exposed so something to keep in mind if that would be an issue for you.
Yes, Sawtooth is pretty mellow overall, especially if you stick to the route description instead of staying on the very top of the ridge the entire time - but you spoil much of the fun if you go around all the little towers and such. It also has less exposure (if you're not playing on the optional towers) except for that last little ramp to get you off the traverse. That ramp is slanted with loose rock and dirt (though not loose enough to be a major problem), as compared to last pitch up Wetterhorn which is very solid rock and literally almost like a natural staircase.

So someone new to exposure on class 3 terrain is more likely to be uncomfortable with that slanted somewhat loose ramp at the end of the Sawtooth traverse than to be bothered by the staircase at the end of Wetterhorn - though either one could really freak out someone who has a major problem with heights.

FYI, Kelso exposure is about the same as Sawtooth except for the short little knife edge - if you want a more detailed analysis of these I did an extensive write-up and comparison: 4 Classic Ridges: Ellingwood, Kelso, Sawtooth and Quandary West Ridge (plus Buckskin) https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/triprepo ... m=tripmine

+1 on Longs

Also, best class 3 bang for your buck:
Kelso Ridge
Quandary West Ridge
13ers - Pacific West Ridge to Atlantic

All have short approaches and offer a lot of fun class 3. If you want something even spicier try Dyer Mountain West Ridge just east of Leadville (class 3 or 4 depending on who you ask and what site you reference)

There is so much slog before you get to the good stuff though. I don't think it's what OP is looking for.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Ellingwood yet. There are a couple of different options (I haven't been on the SW Ridge yet, but by all accounts it also looks great), the rock is solid, and if you hate Lake Como there's another great approach.

Here's a good class 3 route for San Luis and hit 3 13ers along the way :-D . Best to do on descent to climb up the more difficult parts.

I actually did this route a few years back...forgot that there was even class 3 in it. Wrote a trip report, https://14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=15078. I did the class 3 first and descended the easier trail.

Torrey’s Peak via the Kelso ridge is a good option, as is either Wetterhorn peak or quandary west ridge.

Nice report! Yeah you could definitely do the class 3 first. I decided it best to get the easy stuff done in the dark. You managed to get a Sawatch 13er too!

I agree that Kelso on Torreys and the sawtooth are great.
Wetterhorn was a lot of fun also, and the exposed part was quite short.

I also agree the the comment: "I never get tired of longs peak"

Slog? On S Maroon? I think you’re confusing S Maroon with a different peak. S Maroon is fantastic from start to finish.
