Halloween Night Hike - Silverheels Spooktacular

Post by KSU Wildcat »

Halloween Night Hike - Silverheels Spooktacular

What: Full moon Halloween hike - a celestial trifecta:
Hiking / climbing on a Saturday night
Halloween on a Saturday
Full moon

Where: Mount Silverheels (13,822', Rank #96) from Beaver Creek N of Fairplay, CO. Just over the pass from the Winter Welcomer, so you could get in a two-fer!

When: Saturday, October 31st, 2020 - any time after 6:00 p.m.

Sunset: 5:58pm
Moonrise: 6:21pm (allow additional time to crest mountains)

Who: Everyone - warm gear and an adventurous 'spirit' help

Why: A ranked Centennial at night under a full moon on Halloween on a Saturday on a gentle south ridge route that gains over 3,000'.

How: Take 659 north out of Fairplay. The trail head is just north of Beaver Creek campground (see CalTopo map) where 659 turns NE but the N fork crosses the creek. There are two halfmoon turnouts for camping south of the trail head.

If you do this hike after the Winter Welcomer, you don't have to drive home fatigued. Just bring a jetboil, filled thermos, sleeping bag or extra blankets and a full tank of gas to get or keep warm. NO campfires per fire ban.

More to come!

Halloween: Be off the summit by Midnight! Boo-ha-ha-ha...
USFS says the winter gate is open so you can park at the Beaver Creek CG or by the stream crossing.
