Camp Hale - PBS Colorado Experience

Post by dwemp6 »

PBS Rocky Mountain did a great piece on the history and possible future of Camp Hale last week. Well worth the 26 minutes it takes to watch.

Thanks for sharing, I quite enjoyed this. I passed through Camp Hale along the Colorado Trail this past summer and didn’t know much about it. Fascinating area.

This probably the last decade you can talk to Hale veterans. The youngest is 95 years old.

Many of Colorados best ski resorts were created by them in the 1950s when they came back.

Camp Hale has been our summer home for many years.

It is a special place.

We tie in the stories of the 10th Mountain Division and their experiences to the messages we give hundreds of men every summer.

Sacrifice. Honor. Integrity. Courage. Legacy. Vision bigger than yourself.

Last summer's experience was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We plan to be back in 2021.

The https://www.site.peakchallenge.net website gives a summary of who we are and what we do, but let me give you a taste.

Our goal is to get men (as young as 13 and as old as you can still move) out into a wilderness experience. Most men have never done that. Many young men do not have other men to guide, lead and encourage them. We bring homeless men from a homeless shelter that would never get a chance to do this. We encourage and make room for veterans to come experience Peak Challenge.

As believers, we want men to connect with the Maker of what they will be hiking, climbing, fishing, whitewater rafting, trail running, mountain biking and more. We want that in a setting where the trappings of life are left behind (phones, schedules, to do lists, etc.) We desire men to develop relationships that are based on challenge, trust, courage, and a vision of something bigger than themselves.

It is a Tuesday through Friday experience in 2021. Tent camping only at the Camp Hale East Fork Group Campground. The days are filled with men doing things that they may not have ever done or stopped doing when they were young: play. The mountains afford men an opportunity to play via the list of outdoor activities noted above. At night, we tie it all back in with an evening group message and smaller tribe gatherings around the campfire. We find multiple opportunities for men to hike a 14er and follow Leave No Trace and Wilderness regulations. We send men home with a challenge to live their lives full of sacrifice, honor, integrity and courage as the 10th Mountain Division did. We take their motto seriously.

"Climb to Glory".

Excellent book called "The Last Ridge" gives a history of those that trained there and their part in Europe during WWII. Definitely worth a read.

Have not read the book but was able to experience some of the 10th men and their stories. In this case it was the men who want on to pioneer the US ski industry. Does the book follow any of these guys post WW2?
