Which peak?

Post by Gigemdh » Fri Jan 15, 2021 6:46 pm

When I was 15 I summited a 14er with a Young Life 7 day backpack trip. We hiked several days, camped at a lake, got up in middle of the night and climbed to the summit without packs for sunrise. Can’t remember if it was night before at sunset or on the way up at sunrise but the ridge line in the distance had a distinct square notch missing so that the sun was framed perfectly. I can’t remember which peak. Any ideas?

Hmm, the only thing that comes to mind is the Window, on Rio Grande Pyramid

Which peak would have the window in the east or west horizon?

Google images for The Window, Rio Grande Pyramid.

The Window is a big notch that is in a S/N running ridge.
You could have been on the W side and could've seen the sun rise through the Window.
On the E side, you could've seen it set behind a bunch of Weminuche peaks.

Hard telling.

I was thinking of skipping “the window” when I do RGP possibly, but damn! If it’s that prominent I’ll have to make a lollipop in summer :) some of these cents are too beautiful to rush in spring..

It's worth visiting, and doesn't add too much distance to a lollipop from the reservoir. Or you could probably backpack through it with a bit of cross-country.

From eolus, windom, or sunlight, the window would be in the east horizon.

Seems like it would have to be the Window viewed from Sunlight. Or Windom if the view to the east isn’t blocked by Sunlight Spire. How old is the OP? Camping by Twin Lakes has been banned for years and there’s no other lake up there. Well, many other lakes but probably none that a group of Young Life teenagers would be heading to. Even if Sunlight would the Young Life group leaders take newbies up Sunlight in the dark? So many questions.

This would have been in 97. There were 2 leaders and ~6 teenagers. All of us had backpacked/climbed before but definitely not experienced enough to do anything difficult. The window was to our backs during climb up.

Do you remember the leaders names? My brother in law guided in the San Juans in the late 90s for Young Life. If it wasn't him I'm sure he might know who your leaders were,or maybe confirm a location? Maybe a long shot? ..I could ask him and he might know.

Don’t remember anything about the girl leader. The guy was about 6ft or a little under. Dark hair and bushy beard. Went to Texas A&M University.

McHenry's Notch comes to mind. It's not really oriented to frame the Sun from anywhere on Longs but if you guys were spending multiple days in and around Glacier Gorge there are some spots where that could be possible. From Flattop or Taylor Peak for example. Did you climb any other peaks on your trip?
