If you do it right, you might be able to turn a profit. In the mid 90's, I would put all my stuff in storage in late May or early June, and then rent out my house for the next 4 months, and live out of my truck and climb. I did that for 5 years in a row. In those years I climbed 270 13ers, 90 12ers, and thru hiked the Colorado Trail. One year got cut short by injury, or the totals would have been higher. Of course this kind of thing is a lot easier if you're single :-D

Thanks all for helping me to justify my recent $6000 mountain bike purchase based on my decision not to pursue all of the 13ers. I’ll cherry-pick the interesting ones. :-k

Choices! In the end, spending money on hobbies is what life’s about for those without families. Choose well.

All I'll say is that I started getting into this last summer and for 2021 I have a $360 REI dividend :(

Ditto for those with families; it helps if others in your family share your hobbies.

+1. My costs now include my daughter. It isn't much more expensive for 2-4 people than it is for 1. In fact when I go with my brother and nephew it cost me less because we can split gas, motel rooms, etc.

That is an excellent point. Fun climbing 14ers has been a great motivator for me personally. They say those who have specific goals do much better than someone just wanting to get in shape.
"Quicker than I can tell it, my hands failed to hold, my feet slipped, and down I went with almost an arrow’s rapidity. An eternity of thought, of life, of death, wife, and home concentrated on my mind in those two seconds. Fortunately for me, I threw my right arm around a projecting boulder which stood above the icy plain some two or three feet." Rev. Elijah Lamb

blazintoes wrote: Mon Apr 12, 2021 6:12 pm The only aspect I've ever calculated was how much money I spent in gas climbing all the 14ers in winter and computed my driving mileage at 22,338 miles in 50 trips and spent about $5,500 in gas. Oh and I had to buy a new car because I hit an elk going 65 mph on highway 285 on my drive home from one of my trips.
Wow. About 4x cost per mile my gas.

If you added in costs of flights, lodging and rental cars it can get pricy if your trips are purely aimed at the 14ers/13ers.

When driving a Prius helps you save on the overall cost of doing the 14ers and allows you to invest more money into rock climbing gear and snow climbing gear.

I guess I finally found a good use for having access issues!!

no worries, you'll get the hang of buying gear (not at full price) sooner than you think.

Just the amount of money I have spent on fuel to drive to and from the trailheads is a boatload in the last 4 years.
Consecutive months with at least one 13er or 14er, 71 months
