you all can stop worrying about the drought now... here comes the flood

we've had plague, we've had pestilence (at least on the east coast) this year... of course, war and famine are always around. i guess it's time for a nice old flood to come around and finish the job.

Cadillac Desert--likely the greatest text on Western water history--was so eloquently written by the late Mark Reissner over 20 years ago. It is a must read if you choose to live in the West. It sets the tone for "Today's" discussion and for today's solutions.

Having lived on the Western Slope for 20 fantastic years, it grieves me to see the area tinder dry with no hope for remedy.
Thanks Scott P for bringing this graph to our attention.

Looks like a good weekend for summits to avoid some smoke if anyone is on the fence about getting out there! We are sorta in a smokeless bubble starting tomorrow.

depending on which source you go by, the original allocation may have been unsustainable from the beginning even accounting for the fact that it was during an unusually wet period.
John Wesley Powell asserted that the allocation was absolutely unsustainable. In 1893.

Mesa, Arizona has approved a new data center ( they already have about 7 data centers ) which will use 1.25 million gallons of water/day for cooling the computers inside the data center.
This is in addition to a previously approved Google facility already under construction which will use up to 4 million gallons of water/day.
This nothing but short-sighted in face of this drought.
Not to be contentious, but where does this water go after being used for cooling? The data centers I'm familiar with use a closed loop glycol-like coolant.
