Your favorite __er in CO (14er, 13er, etc.)

Post by -wren- »

I’m curious what everyone’s favorite CO peak in each elevation range is (that they’ve climbed) - post name/link of them if you would like :) My experience is still limited especially up high so I’ll revisit this later but so far here are mine.

14er: Mt. Princeton

13er: Pacific Peak
https://listsofjohn.com/mobile/peak/78

12er: Peak 6, unranked but probably the most extreme inbounds skiing off a named peak in CO which is cool
https://listsofjohn.com/mobile/peak/1248

11er: Rosedale Peak, also unranked but an excellent view
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/1876

10er: Thorodin Mountain, mainly for three unranked rock outcroppings along the way that serve up very fun and exposed scrambles
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/2749

9er: The Castle (favorite peak overall)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/3445

8er: Long Scraggy Peak
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/4328

7er: Goat Mountain (unranked but easily Waterton Canyon’s best)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/5457

6er: Castle Rock (the one with the town named after it)

fair enough, I only got really into peakbagging in July of ‘20 and therefore have spent a lot of time at low elevation because I didn’t have enough experience with avy terrain and the other dangers of alpine winter to be up there. This upcoming snow season will be different.

14er - Eolus or Crestone. Stellar views from both of them. Fun routes up.
13er - McHenrys. The entire route is scenic. The upper basin is a special place. Haven't done Arrowhead->McHenrys ridge but it looks fun.
12er - "Island Lake Peak" - Combination of scenic, plus some fun/albeit loose scrambling. Tough call, so many good ones.
11er - Mestas - feels like a much bigger peak than it is. Some good prominence on this one.
10er - Lost Platte - feels so isolated yet so close to civilization
9er - Lily - pretty much the only summit my chihuahua has been on.
8er - Sheep Nose - fun scramble with stellar views. Short and sweet.
7er - Greyrock - very cool mountain in Fort Collins area. Have done it many times. It never gets old.
6er - Garfield - great views of GJ area.
5er - Goat Hill - another Fort Collins landmark.
4er - Two Buttes - good leg stretcher on the way to Texas/Oklahoma.

Cool that you've done The Castle, wren. I really want to try that one sometime.

Edit: The chihuahua's only successful summit is actually Lily Mountain. Failed attempts on 12er Madonna Dome and 11er Epworth. Not LoJ account worthy. She might do Kruger Rock later this summer though.

Sopris looks like a super enjoyable peak as do a lot of the more prominent/independent 12ers in the Elks, moving to gunnison in august and can’t wait to do some exploring out there. Turret ridge looks gut-wrenchingly terrifying. Even if there were only 50 12ers+ I would not be interested in finishing them if turret was one of them.

Cool thread Wren, But Princeton, really? I imagine that will change with time. :-D

14ers- Eolus- Also Wetterhorn and Lindsey, I have a hard time picking between those 3.

13ers- So many it's hard to pick. Maybe V2 by Ice Lakes Basin. Gorgeous views, easy day.

12ers- Have done very few. Hallett Peak is my favorite of those.
Climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.

Oh for sure, wetterhorn, longs, possibly crestone and kelso ridge are all in the plans for this summer along with a couple of class 3-4 13er linkups in the next few weeks. All my experience with scrambling besides the west ridge of pacific is below treeline since I got comfortable with it in October.

14er-Capitol with Wetterhorn as a runner up, but I haven't done the Crestones yet so this may change.

13er-Hard to say. Maybe Eagles Nest? Jagged or Vestal might be my favorites after I climb them.

12er-Devils Thumb even though it is unranked.

11er-Lone Eagle even though it is unranked.

10er-Rabbit Ears

9er-Can I count Haus Rock? If not maybe City ot Sawtooth Mountains.

8er-Prospect

7er-Definitely Peak 7071, which is also my favorite mountain in Colorado.

6er-Outlaw Peak

5er-Independence Monument

4er-Dinosaur Hill only because I can't think of many 4ers
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.
