4-days backpacking loop suggestioons

Post by Alex »

Hi,
I plan to do four-days backpacking loop in the next couple of weeks. I would prefer to have some 13-ers available from the loop. My main restrictions - it should not be more difficult technically than difficult class 2, and I am not ready to drive as far as San Huan

I also considered Area of Shavano - Tabeguache - Antero, but could not find a loop there.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Look into the Rito Alto 4-Pass Loop. Quite a few 13ers available.

Consider the loop around Mt of the Holy Cross, from the Halfmoon Creek TH to the Cross Creek TH. You'd either need to walk/hitchhike along Tigiwon Road to complete the loop or set up a vehicle shuttle, but its a fun loop on good trails with great scenery and probably not too crowded. Whitney Peak, Fancy Peak, PT 13768, Holy Cross Ridge, and Notch Mountain are all possible as side trips.

I am still comparing the options.
Do you know, if Half Moon Creek TH allows overnight parking? Does it require any permits to be obtained before the trip?

He meant the Halfmoon TH, not Halfmoon Creek (that's by Elbert and Massive). Yes, Halfmoon TH allows overnight. Permits are free and self service at the trailhead.

You might get some ideas from listening to this podcast episode from the non-standard 14er podcast group ...
https://nonstandard14er.podbean.com/e/b ... pisode-32/

Several of these are Class 3, but all include at least one 14er and one 13er. One option that I recall from the podcast was Browns/Little Browns Creek camping and hiking in the vicinity of Antero. I don't remember if it was a loop though.

We ended up using recommendation in the podcast mentioned. Very nice place to camp at Browns Lake. Trail to Antero from the lake allows to avoid most (but the top part) of the otherwise boring ATV/Jeep road going as high as 13800.
Thanks to everybody!
