10 Mile Traverse Info

Hey! I’m considering doing the 10-mile traverse in the next couple weeks. I found some pretty good trip reports on this site that cover the tougher sections on Peaks 1-4. It seems like things get pretty involved traversing from Peak 3-4, including a “knife edge.” I was wondering if anyone had photos or tips for the harder sections of the traverse. Thanks!

You'll be mostly ridge proper but not entirely. If anything feels too hard or exposed, drop a little west. You can keep the difficulty at 3rd with maybe just a smattering of 4th. In dropping west, regain the ridge at the next best opportunity or you could end up in cliffier terrain.

2nd time I did it and stayed mostly ridge proper:

1st time, stayed west a little too long between 3 and 4, you can see it in the gps track - don't do that:

It's been a few years but the traverse between Tenmile (Peak 2) and Peak 4 is the work. This shot makes it look spicey but you can definitely drop to the west (right) and keep it Class 3 - and relatively easy Class 3. You can pop back up onto the ridge if you want some Class 4 options, too.

I did the full Peaks 1 - 10 traverse once, but I've gone back since and cut down Peak 6 to the Far East Trailhead at Copper. I know it doesn't sound as cool, but beyond Peak 6 you're walking on the ski resort which is... fine. I really like the 1 - 6 traverse because it ends the adventure before it becomes a slog. If you're hiking with a buddy, leaving a car at Far East isn't a big drive, either.

Note that you can do this without a car shuttle if you take Summit Stage back to Frisco from Breckenridge.

You can also do a shorter loop that ends after all the good scrambling without any kind of shuttle if you take the Miner's Trail down after Peak 5. Last time I descended off Peak 5 to Miner's Trail on the Frisco side, Peaks Trail past Rainbow Lake back to the car at the 2nd Ave lot.
