Apex Ski boots in the backcountry

Curious if anybody here has tried the Apex Ski boot system, and if it's a viable option for ski mountaineering? I've always thought it would be great to have an external brace that you could add to your climbing boots to make them stiff enough for skiing, rather than climbing in your AT boots.

The site has some videos showing skiers hiking up in their boots, but wondering if the boots are usable as a hiking/climbing boot? How firm is the sole? Could you put strap-on crampons on it?

The right AT boot will both ski and climb better than that thing, plus your only option will be frame bindings or trekkers instead of a proper tech toe. Look at the Scarpa Alien, Atomic Backland, Fischer Travers class (900-1100g/boot).

That’s because they’re fifteen year-old, 1700g beef boots. I’m sure they’re terrible for skinning and skiing too.
