Pikes Peak Death on Little Italy

Very sad to read about this. This poor family :(

Little Italy is only 30-35 degrees steep and gets skied often. However, if the snow is smooth and firm, 30 degrees is plenty steep enough to take you to the bottom if you have an uncontrolled fall. Be careful folks.

Another sad ski day in the couloir. The Gazette article on it is here. Expect a follow-up article on skiing the peak in general in a few days.

Reminds me of the tumble Dan Fenaughty took there years ago. He lived, but suffered terrible injuries.

My girlfriend, our dogs, and I climbed Little Italy yesterday. We encountered the Dewey family twice as they did multiple runs in the couloir...taking turns driving the others from the Glen Cove hairpin area to Devil's Playground. They seemed to be having such a great time skiing the couloir. Near the top, we chatted with Rachel Dewey as she and the others waited for the previous skier to clear the run. She commented upon the wonderful weather and conditions, complimented our dogs on their climbing ability, and joked about the "edgy" descent. It's always great to run into such friendly people in the outdoors...enhances the already great experience of something like a good climb of Little Italy.

What a tragic end to the day for Rachel and her family... We were so shocked to hear the news of her accident, soon after we got back home from our climb. Our condolences to the Dewey family on their tragic loss of wife and mother.

Prayers of comfort and strength for Rachel's family, friends, and students. May she rest in peace forever, and may her memory always be a blessing.
