You can drink any water in an emergency and you would get sick (if at all) only in a few days after you are already back to civilization.

His main errors were not having good knowledge of these summits, not having a map and a compass and not having sufficient navigation skills.
He has not even mentioned them.
Because of this, I totally support his decision "to stick to the Appalachian Trail from now on".

Sure. I can give you some stories so that you can make fun of me. I have a lot of stories. Doesn't change the fact that this guy screwed up bad. So what. He's alive and that's all that counts. I have a feeling that he's prob telling everyone, "I'm an idiot for going down the wrong way." It's not like I'm condemning him to hell or anything. lol. Lighten up man.
