Tragic news. Condolences to his family and friends.

"I get scared sometimes—lots of times—but it's not bad. You know? I feel close to myself. When I'm out there at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving, my skin and my fingernails, everything, it's like I'm full of electricity and I'm glowing in the dark—I'm on fire almost—I'm burning away into nothing—but it doesn't matter because I know exactly who I am." from The Things They Carried

Damn. This is devastating news.

I met Don on a Kilimanjaro trip in 2009. At one of the remote camps on safari one night Jeff (mickeysgrenade), Don and I closed down the "bar" at the campground - drinking heavily and smoking Sportsman's cigarettes. We became fast friends. This remains one of my fondest memories of Don.

Then, a few years back I remember a night where Jeff, Don and I were out for beers and they were telling me about one of their mountain epics. I told them both, "you're the most hardcore dudes I've ever met". And that remains the truth to this day. They both laughed, because...well...that's the kind of guys they are. Don had a love for mountains and adventure and even though I hadn't seen him a lot in the last few years, I'm glad to have known him.

RIP buddy - you were without a doubt one badass motherfucker...

Rough month so far. 71 years old and still tackling more challenging routes is something I aspire to. Wish I could have met the man.
