Very sad news, from what I can find the black wall looks like it has serious rock climbing routes.

Yes this is tragic of course, though very different from accidents generally reported on this board. Just to clarify this point the Black Wall has many technical routes (the easiest of which start at around 5.10d) - those routes being the goal and not viewed as a means to climb Mount Spalding. I.e., it's similar to climbing on the Diamond on Longs, only it's way easier to access and escape from and surprisingly less well known.
