Tears ago, I found a great pack that worked wonderful for both purposes.

I use a Chicobag as a daypack whenever I backpack and need to have a light day pack for submitting (used it for Antero/Shavano/Tabeguache last month from the CT). It has a hydration sleeve, so I can just move my Camelbak into it and it has enough pockets to hold all the items i need for summiting. Only about 8oz, so not that much extra weight. No waist strap, so might not work if you need a pack with one (although you may be able to add one).
