Was out hitting some of the peaks on the north edge of RMNP today and saw a big new forest fire on the way out. Here's a pic from Long Draw Road:
And my view of the area earlier in the day before the fire started:
They were shutting down all the roads as I was driving out, lots of emergency vehicles and small aircraft in the area. This is gonna be a pretty bad fire season for the US.

I went up Longs yesterday evening, and it wasn't really smoky at all despite not being able to see it from the Boulder area yesterday afternoon with the haze. There was smoke to the south and to the north but pretty much clear, blue skies over Longs. Yes, I'm sure this could change if the winds shifted.
Since Thursday the Cameron Peak Fire has grown from 26k acres to over 96k as a result of the heat wave and high winds. The fire has spread significantly into RMNP and prompted the closure of Trail Ridge Road. It has been raining ash since Friday night here in town, and it looked like twilight at 1 PM today. The fire now ranks 5th all-time in the recorded history of Colorado. Hopefully the impending storm and cooler temperatures will abate the spread, but the winds leading up to the storm certainly did not help.
The Cameron Peak Fire is now the largest in recorded Colorado history at 164k acres as of 8 AM this morning. Glen Haven, Masonville, Storm Mountain, and Palisade Mountain have been evacuated, and Estes Park Power & Communication has begun shutting off services near Glen Haven.
I was greeted by this pyrocumulus over Loveland and Fort Collins on my drive up I-25 returning home from southern Colorado yesterday. At first I thought it was a storm cloud, until I got closer.
