Lion Gulch Trailhead #949 - open or not?
Help me out people
i never get up that way.
some chatter from forest service that it is closed - but also might be open?
and a 2019 google streetview of the parking lot makes it look to be open too?
I don't wanna find out the hard way. Thx.

Re: Lion Gulch Trailhead #949 - open or not?
It had been re-opened for a couple years now, after several years of flood closure. We hiked it last Fall, trail in great shape.
If it's closed, it's a new/recent closure, but I don't see anything here to suggest that it's closed.
Where's the 'chatter?'

Of note I did it in 2018 and saw a mountain lion. I guess I know why it's called lion gulch.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Lion Gulch is open. The map you shared is from 2016 when it was closed. Parking may be limited on weekends, as half or more of the lot is being used to store machinery/equipment for the reroute of the reroute of the Little Thompson.
Depending on what your goal is for the day, Hermit Park also offers ample hiking opportunities and pleasant trails.

All true and lion gulch should be open now. Hermit Park OS is closed in winter, check the county website for exact dates, I think Dec. Also when it gets cold enough, there is a very icy stream crossing halfway up lion gulch trail in a pool below some small falls, so bring spikes for that. It's fairly wide.

It’s been awhile, but I guess we found UN9475’ and UN8380’ (North) to be the funnest hills in the area, same time of year. Have fun!

Also cool to see the cabin remains in homestead meadows, lots of relics

OK people - help me out --
is this parking lot free and clear now?
there aren't mounds of snow from plows all piled up in there?
any updates appreciated. merry xmas!

While i haven't been up there, it is highly likely that the lot is OK, based on conditions elsewhere in the foothills.

Re: Lion Gulch Trailhead #949 - open or not?
yes I guess that does make sense.
keep thinking it is snowier than it is.
but the ballgame is ticking down to final minutes - the december 'new spot' challenge is still up for grabs - should I haul way up this way?
or possibly get to unfinished business up in flatirons instead?
i really liked launching from NCAR last december. i wouldn't mind just doing that again- hopefully not in a snow storm at dusk!
