Where should one put the mothballs? I have never had any problems with critters boarding my car, knock on wood.

Yes, and I do this at most TH's.
Even on a 7 day backpack out of Beartown in the Weminuche. Used coyote urine granules on that trip as well.

Some time in the '90's, I returned to the Goose Creek trailhead near the Lost Creek Wilderness Area, and several people told me their cars had been broken into. Mine, however was untouched. I think this is because it was an ancient rust bucket of an old Scout, and the thieves must have thought such a dilapidated old hunk of junk couldn't possibly contain anything worth stealing. I didn't linger long, nor mention that my vehicle was untouched, lest people think that this meant I was the perpetrator.
