Where should one put the mothballs? I have never had any problems with critters boarding my car, knock on wood.

I put a dozen or so mothballs in pantyhose and tie off the end, then drape them over the axles around my tires and hitch. I guess it works?

Oh so you do that every time you park at a TH and then remove before leaving

Yes, and I do this at most TH's.
Even on a 7 day backpack out of Beartown in the Weminuche. Used coyote urine granules on that trip as well.

What matters is hopefully deterring pesky animals from chewing car parts and getting potentially stranded.

Some time in the '90's, I returned to the Goose Creek trailhead near the Lost Creek Wilderness Area, and several people told me their cars had been broken into. Mine, however was untouched. I think this is because it was an ancient rust bucket of an old Scout, and the thieves must have thought such a dilapidated old hunk of junk couldn't possibly contain anything worth stealing. I didn't linger long, nor mention that my vehicle was untouched, lest people think that this meant I was the perpetrator.
