US 50

Post by pw »

Saw this on the CDOT page today. This should be fun (not). Seems like the detour would be over Cottonwood Pass and then down to Gunnison.

US 50 between Montrose and Gunnison, extensive closures begin April 2021 through April 2022. Motorists are asked to detour via Interstate 70 or US 160. More information is available at:

Please see this other thread that is already covering this topic: https://www.14ers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=59720

Cottonwood Pass gets you from BV to Gunnison. The stretch between Montrose and Gunnison is what is affected, not the stretch between Gunnison and Salida.

8 just received an update on this. They began preliminary work on Monday, April 5th.
Road closures will begin the week of April 17.
The project website has a slide of the closure schedules.

I was up on the North Rim of the Black Canyon the other day, drove around via Blue Mesa dam. The portable CDOT signs were up just past Blue Mesa Summit saying work will begin on the 12th. Can't believe ~two years of this.
But if it improves access through Big Blue Canyon, I'm all for it. That stretch of road in winter is SKETCH.
