Overnight camping on Elbert - Need suggestions

Post by eemerson »

Good evening,

My brother and I are looking for some dispersed camping locations on Mount Elbert. We are mainly looking at the SE Trail because that looks to have the best potential water sources (but are open to other routes as well). We will have heavy-ish packs until we set up camp. Taking a daypack to Summit.

This will be my 4th 14er, but I've only camped with guides or done a day hike in the past. This will be my brother's first attempt. I'm familiar with what is required, but this will be my first time "leading" someone up the mountain to camp overnight. Planning to be on the mountainside for 2 nights.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Mainly concerned about water..... we will have tablets to purify our water, but I'm concerned that we will hike up and find no water in the streams. If anyone has any good camping spots near water sources, that would be especially helpful.

Thanks!

I think your better bet would be the east ridge. Camp near Lily ponds, they should be holding water. And you'll have a much easier hike from that side.
