Car camping around Durango

Post by BeckyYoung89 »

Hello Hive Mind!

I have a train res. at the end of August. Seeing as it's a 5 hour drive for me to Durango, and the train leaves at 8 in the morning, I'm wondering about free car camping options surrounding Durango. Anyone have any pleasant spots they'd be willing to share about? I read that FS 599 was usually a good bet, but have also read lately that it's been closed to camping.

If you have GAIA or CalTopo, download the “Public Land (US)” overlay and look for BLM land. That’s generally the way I’ve had the best luck finding dispersed camping and I recall there being several BLM areas around Durango. Enjoy!
