Red Wing cutoff on drive from Westcliffe to Alamosa

Post by wineguy »

I've taken the Mosca Pass road to Red Wing many times while driving from Westcliffe to Alamosa, saves many miles by avoiding the long drive through Walsenburg. The last two times I tried this route a sign in Red Wing said that 570 is closed to through traffic. However, I've been told that one can still drive this road to HWY 160, even though the sign says the road is closed. Anyone here have recent experience driving this "shortcut?"
"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters." - Norman Maclean

Don't have an update on Mosca Pass Road, John, but in early August we used Pass Creek Road (Hwy 572).

I have used both, and Mosca Pass Road is the better of the two, imho.
There have been incidents of flash flooding on Pass Creek Road, resulting in injuries and death.
My friends in Westcliffe tell me to avoid Pass Creek Road if there is any chance of rain.
The residents on Pass Creek Road have a FB page with flash flood updates
