Where was this taken?

Post by dlew8470 »

Hello All: My uncle lived in the Denver area for a short time in 1977-78. We were recently looking at some of his pictures from that time, and came across this one. I asked him where he was, and which mountains were in the photo, but he didn't know. He was new to the area, and was just exploring with no apparent destination. I thought I would crowdsource and see if anyone recognizes the location/mountains. I'm not from the area, but was curious to know. Thanks.

Could be off, but it looks like James Peak viewed from top of Magnolia Rd in Nederland. I was just up there a few weeks ago.

Mag Road doesn't crest a a pass similar to what is shown in OP's photo...also, James Peak isn't shown in the recent photo, that is N Arapahoe/Apache, Shoshoni, etc. James Peak would be out of frame to the left...

*edit; you're latest photo definitely shows James Peak, but I still don't think that's where OP's image is.

Ok, I think I got it. The peak in the distance on the right is Bald Mountain, and the peak on the left is Boreas Mountain. The road the vehicle is parked on is probably County Road 56, east of Jefferson in Park County.

You can see the general area from this photo sphere I found on Google: https://goo.gl/maps/Ng9rh2DJVdavUjsu9

I have nothing to add as far as peak identification, but I can identify the vehicle as an awesome Jeep Commando (circa 1970).

Correct -- with a 'three-speed' transmission according to my uncle.

Probably not . I had a 1969 Jeepster Commando and the 3-speed was on the floor. The one in this thread is about 100 times nicer than mine . Still it had more 4x4 balls than any vehicle I have owned.

Wouldn't surprise me. Those 3 speeds on the column always seemed to end up being a PITA, anyways...

I wonder how many young drivers could find the headlight dimmer switch on those old vehicles. :wft:
