Comet NEOWISE

Post by Eli Boardman »

If you haven't heard about the comet yet, it's worth looking up. If you have seen it, and have gotten some pics, let's share them!

This was about a week ago, with the comet over some ancient petroglyphs in Wyoming.

I went out the other night to get a picture. I don't know much about photography, but I got this shot of it over Leadville.

We had a great view of Comet NEOWISE over the San Miguels from our campsite near Bolam Pass last weekend. Look closely in the shadows at the bottom and you might recognize a 14er or two...

Man, I feel envious of the people who were able to get a shot of it. I was asleep when it supposedly "passed by."

You slept for a long time then! It was visible in the sky in the early morning and at night for a couple of weeks.

Mtn_nut -- that is awesome. How did you expose two minutes without getting star trails?

Here's a shot via the Night Sight setting on my cell phone through a birding scope.

I have a vixen polarie star tracker that allows me to move the camera at the same rate as the sky as long as I line it up accurately with the north star. I also have a few really nice prime lenses. That shot is with my A6100 w/ Rokinon 135mm F/2 lens with an astrokraken holder. It helps to have a sturdy tripod too (FLM CP30-S4 II) and a good ballhead (Markins M10).

I actually just got a ioptron skyguider pro mount, so that should allow me to use a guide camera and get even longer exposures.

Here's another shot, with the ISS intersecting the comets tail. (this is compressed, not full resolution)

And another I took with my big sigma 600mm lens (this is compressed, not full resolution)

Is the tail still visible via binoculars or spotting scope? Waited too long to try to view it, and last week the glare from the moon only made the comet itself visible.
