Leave the name as it is. Another poster had it right. Once you start down this road, where do you stop?
There may be more people offended by changing the name than by leaving it as is.

Wow, I can't believe this is still going on. Leave it alone and move on to something worthwhile.

You posted to tell other people to stop posting?

Good strategy to keep it off the top of the list...

LOL. Plus, the vote hasn't actually happened yet, so it's a good reminder!

It's been four minutes since anybody posted in this thread; are there any new developments?

Just this email I received two days ago. Thanks Jim, Shaun, Mr. Pilgrim, Terry and *especially* SES_17, for getting this thread back on to the home page! I might have forgotten all about it! Cheers :D
  • Thank you for the copy of the interview; we shall add it to the case, and make the Board members aware of its content. This case will be, as all are, analyzed and judged on its own merits. We are sure that various organizations have topic specific guidelines; even rules, but we can comment that no rules are enforced universally in the naming process (other than commemorative naming) in the United States. It is acceptable for the highest point (any point) on a mountain to have a different geographic name, and so that is not normally a factor. The opinion of the county and town are important because those representatives are elected to represent the local populace. Also, the recommendation of the State Names Authority is highly important. Everyone's opinion is important and considered. Once again, the staff will analyze every aspect of these proposals and make all information available to the members of the Board, who will also make their own interpretation in relation to policy and vote accordingly.

We shall let you know the Board's Decision.

And we have closure: The BGN voted to deny the name change.

By R. SCOTT RAPPOLD, THE GAZETTE

A southern Colorado fourteener will continue to be named for Civil War hero and Western icon Kit Carson, after an effort by the San Luis Valley town of Crestone to rename it.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names today voted 10-0 to deny a proposal to rename the 14,265-foot peak "Mount Crestone."

Some locals say the mountain was wrongly named after Kit Carson a century ago, and is in fact called "Mount Crestone" by everyone in the community. But board members, meeting in Washington, felt to rename it would cause confusion.

There are two other similarly-named fourteeners in the area, "Crestone Peak" and "Crestone Needle."

"It’s inconclusive whether the names got switched back in 1906 or whatever. Even if it did, it's been that way for over 100 years," said board executive secretary Lou Yost.

Also , they declined to name the summit Kit Carson Peak, or Tranquility Peak. I think...

Maybe USBG board member Lou Yost could petition for his own name change- and switch the first letter of his first name, with the first letter of his last name?
