Hiking poles for speed?

I just listened to the recommended podcast and it seems like they are implying that the slower you go, the more beneficial the balancing aspects of poles are (and conversely, the faster, the less beneficial). I guess this makes sense; the slower you go on a bike the harder it is to balance.
