neoprene skins on K-10 crampons

Post by DestroyMySweater »

I was wondering if anyone uses the Kahtoola K-10 crampons and has trouble with the neoprene snow release skins, specifically if the skins wear out and get holes in them when going on rocks. It seems like one weakness, at least compared to crampons that have true anti-balling / antibott features to keep snow from collecting.

These are the same features on the KTS crampons, so you can chime in on that. I'd be curious to hear what others have experienced.

I have the k-10s. I think my neoprene skins finally got ripped off, but they are considered snow release skins. One of the nice things about them is that if you are in snow conditions that don't require them or are on rocks a lot on a particular route, they're very easy to take off and save for snow conditions that actually need them to keep balling minimized.

That being said, I really like my k-10s and prefer them as long as I'm not having to front point into real hard snow/ice. They're good in between when you want something more substantial than a microspike, but you don't quite need something like a BD sabertooth.
