Had an ad popup for a home wind turbine. There's a bunch for under $300.
Anyone have one off these things?
I don't have natural gas at my residence so I'm all electric, and heating in winter in pretty expensive.
I haven't done a bunch (any) research on this and the return on investment, but$300 is pretty low entry. I assume there's some electrical work and batteries and whatnot, but still, anyone gone down this rabbit hole and have any advice?

Re: Home wind turbines
I haven't done ton of research on the topic, but my impression is that for that amount of money around here you can get turbine that produces 20 to 30W of power. In comparison, you are producing about 10 times more power while leisurely riding your bike. (But you already know that.)
Even 1kW of electrical power can't do much heating in the typical home, imho. Well built 3kW ceramic or clay storage heater will probably warm up moderately sized room to comfortable temperature in winter, and you can make it more efficient by storing the heat during the night and blowing it out during the day. https://consumer-rights.org/news/storage-heaters/

I might spring for one of these for $1200 if you are into it... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08YN3CGV9

if they worked, we would all have one already.

Re: Home wind turbines
Not very practical for residential purposes unless you live somewhere without neighbours or other obstructions and get sustained winds. The 3kw turbine linked from Amazon further up in this thread requires 27mph winds to produce the rated 3kw - are you realistically getting those kind of speeds?

Re: Home wind turbines
Any type of intermittent power generation is probably going to need batteries. Like mentioned above minimal wattage is not good on its own, but when paired with a battery you can store that minimal generation during off-peak hours and use it during peak hours.
I bet that those small windmills pair well with someone who already has solar installed. Otherwise, I figure the additional electrical infrastructure needed for a small windmill might outweigh the benefits.
