Re: Slow Hikers Unite!
Sounds good. I might be slightly faster. Sometimes I'm stopped for 5 minutes taking pictures, but otherwise slow and steady.
I'm looking for climbing partners during the dates July 23-30 and August 14-17 and want to do the Sangre de Cristo and San Juans.
Lets get together and enjoy the mountains.

Re: Slow Hikers Unite!
Would any of the slow hikers be interested in climbing a 14er on Saturday? My pace is about 1,000 feet per hour. I live in the Denver area, and would love to climb Princeton or Huron if someone has a 4wd, but open to most Collegiate Peaks. Thanks.

Is 1000ft/hr really slow?
I always thought that was about average. Of course it's slow to some of the super humans on here.
If I hike 1200 ft/hr, I rarely get passed...

Thank you for saying that! Haha. I was super excited by this thread, until I saw that by "slow" we're talking about hikers who can go 1000 vertical feet/hour going up Crestone Needle. I was thinking about starting a thread called "REALLY Slow Hikers Unite"...Is 1000ft/hr really slow?

I average about 750-850 vertical feet per hour ascending, though it depends on the mountain. Going down, probably 900-1050 vertical feet per hour. I'm running out of "easy" 14ers in which to slowly meander my way to the summit, and will need to start challenging myself with the more moderate ones. Probably aiming for Princeton, Humboldt, and/or Uncompaghre next.

Re: Slow Hikers Unite!
Hiking speed in ft/hr has a lot of variables. I don't think you can measure it for class 3 or above. Route finding, skill, familiarity, and technical difficulties all add their own dimensions. Its only useful for class 1 or 2 hiking on a decent trail with fairly consistent elevation gain. Everyone has a natural pace or cadence. Pushing past that natural pace exerts a lot of extra energy. And its not uncommon to see your pace slow considerably as you gain elevation between 11,000-14,000 ft. So I'd say 1000ft/hr is average to slow, but not REALLY slow. I strive for 2000ft/hr or more. I think that's fast, but not REALLY fast. I've seen folks cruise by me on occasion. They're pushing the 3000ft/hr realm. Then I've seen folks jogging up the trail. Yikes! I've also seen some "pole setters" race by me at 11,000ft only to have me hike right past them at 13,000ft. In the end, all that matters is knowing your limitations. And that's a good thing to know when it comes to hiking. It should be one of the 11 essentials.LostSole wrote:Jon1702 wrote:Thank you for saying that! Haha. Re: Slow Hikers Unite!
If anyone is interested in Uncompahgre, Humboldt, Shavano or Crestone Peak ~ 8/11, let me know. I prefer casual pace and I seem to average for the trips ~ 1.2 mph whether it is class 1 or class 4. I am open to other peaks as well, incl 13ers.
