Longs tomorrow 1/26

Post by Micaiah » Mon Jan 25, 2021 12:15 pm

I have an itch to hit Longs tomorrow. North Face or Keyhole. Early start. It's gonna be really cold...-8 for a high, wind chill -10 to -35. Steady pace and the right gear to handle conditions will be critical to avoid frostbite. Hunting a partner with the right temperament, experience, and clothing to enjoy a day out in the cold.

If you could do Thursday, I’d be interested. Will look forward to an update on conditions up there if you do go tomorrow

Maybe Sunday. It's my last chance for a January tick. I bailed yesterday - too cold (high of 1).

Hrmm, Sunday may be possible. We'll see what chores I can knock out before the weekend. Looks like no takers for tomorrow. Hitting some alpine ice with a shorter approach instead.

I'd love to join you guys Sunday. What route do you have in mind, Justin? I know you're working on the Longs Peak Project—are you going for something unique while the snow is at low tide?

I was just going to do Keyhole - January is a very tough time on the bike - just cold all the way, so something easy for January can be nice - I sorta need a gimme for this month. If the conditions cooperate, NW Gully is also an option. All the other routes I'd like to do in the coming months are mostly snow climbs, and it just doesn't seem like there's enough snow now to make them in conditions (and maybe it's time I buy actual mountaineering boots? ). Feb could be Keplingers if the avy level is low.

I did Cables for my December tick, although it was before the magical Winter date. Depending (my availability, conditions), I'd be down to do it again.

NW Couloir/Gully is an excellent winter route, I did it in January years ago. It'd be sporty solo, we did the 5th class option w/ a short rope, but solo I'd probably opt for the tunnel. Watch the wind on the upper ridge, big air there (West Face) if you're knocked off your feet.
