Pinto Mountain, in the middle of the Mojave National Preserve. No one there but us, anywhere in the vicinity. A rarely climbed summit, and I find this:

I think that's a comma. Hiking with FOTM produces odd register entries.

Garratt placed the register on nearby T 2 (aka Block Tops) a few years after I was born. Some funny commentary in there.

Here's a fun one--east summit of the Twin Peaks (13er at the head of Titcomb Basin), Wyoming.

It was placed by a CMC group on the peak's 2nd ascent in August 13, 1930. Among those in the CMC party were Carl Blaurock (signature by red arrow) and Dwight Lavender. Their pencil writings are a bit faded 90 years later, but still clearly legible. I was honored to add my own name to this historical register many pages later.


Henderson Peak (another Titcomb 13er) also still has its original register, placed in 1943 by the Wasatch Mountain Club, also on the peak's 2nd ascent. Here's a fun page from it, showing a signature by Joe Kelsey, the legendary Wind River guidebook author. It's the only time I've ever seen his name in a summit register. I believe I was the 35th party to sign-in.

Here's another old CMC register, placed on the summit of Sunbeam Peak (Dinwoody region 13er) in 1961. I'm choosing to showcase this relatively recent page since it will probably be of most relevance to the Colorado community, with three CO 12er finishers (Teresa Gergen, Kirk Mallory, and Ken Nolan) all signing in on their 2008 ascent.


One more, just for fun: the register on the summit of Spearhead Pinnacle, the most difficult WY 13er. It was placed in 2010 by a group consisting of Jim Rickard, Adam McFarren, Teresa Gergen, Sarah T. Meiser, and Dominic Meiser. (Note that Teresa and Sarah went on to become the first WY 13er finishers 5 years later.) No one else had signed in since their ascent, making my entry the first one in almost a decade. I had to use duct tape for my name since I forgot a pencil and there wasn't one left on the summit.

That's Belleview across the valley. So probably 13,062 B (which I haven't done yet).

The view of Snowmass is from the south, I think its PT 12489. I was on Meadow a couple of weeks ago, definitely too far south to be Meadow, and contrary to the name its not a grassy summit.

I was there this morning, certainly a cool one.

Here's one from 1951 first ascent of Castle Rock in Rocky Mountain National Park. Also saw Lisa Foster's and Ken Nolan's names. The lid on the register is badly cracked if anyone ends up going that way before it snows.

Creative use of duct tape, that's for sure. I'm amazed you had the time and patience to do that.

The Mt Whitney register box had a boatload of dry pens when I finished the JMT in August. A lot of people were just barely able to faintly sign the register in rapidly fading pink ink when I got there.

Fortunately, I had a sharpie with me. So my entry does stand out from the others. Not as much as using duct tape, though. I donated the sharpie to the box for other hikers to use.

Paul Horton is also a legendary Teton/Wind River climber. Paul has a website about summit registers on GTNP.

We found two Brown Bear Mountaineering registers yesterday.
