Mountain movies/documentaries

Post by jaymz »

I’ve been waiting for “Free Solo” and “Dawn Wall” to come out on Netflix or Amazon Prime, but just had “Mountain” recommended to me - absolutely stunning scenery and climbing shots, with Willem Defoe narrating on the human fascination with mountains. On my second time through it right now.

So it got me thinking: what else am I missing? I’m all about being out in the mountains instead of sitting on my butt watching them through a screen, but with a 2-month old often in my lap I’m not really afforded the luxury of getting out much right now.

“Meru” is always a go-to.
“To Be the First: The Quest for Yangmolong” was pretty good.
Heck, I’ll even search “Window Channel Colorful Colorado” and enjoy some good San Juan scenery for an hour or so.

What else ya’ll got?

Here's all the Reel Rocks,

This one is pretty amazing,

This has little to do with mountains, but is an incredible trip,

In addition to the ones Justin mentioned, Redbull tv also has a series about a guy climbing all of the 6000m peaks in the Andes (I think its literally called 6000m or something obvious like that), I just only watched the first one, but I'm looking forward to the rest because it looks like potentially excellent mountain porn.
The days I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I have really good days.

Higher Ambitions is really good.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

I enjoyed "Encounter at the Summit Cross" (Amazon Prime). There are several good mountain flicks there. I second "Higher Ambitions" w/Tim Boelter & "Touching the Void". "K2: Siren of the Himalayas" is another that used to be on Netflix that I recall being good. There are many others. "The Summit" is a very good documentary about a disaster on K2. I think that may still be on Netflix. "Aerial America" on the Smithsonian channel often has very good aerial mountain footage, plus any Warren Miller film.

"The Art Of Freedom", about Polish climbers including Jerzy Kukuzka, is on Amazon Prime. One of the most badass climbers of all time and hardly anybody knows about him.

Thanks for the reminder, I know what I'll be watching tonight! =D> :-D

It was mentioned by the OP, but Meru...my all time favorite.

I love Jimmy Chin's broad talent base.

I like the TV series "Aerial America" just to get a solid dose of outdoors shots.

Western states only obviously.
Keep looking up - Jack Horkheimer
