How does Nellie Creek compare to LKB?

Post by merrion13 »

For those who have done the drive on both, I'm curious to hear perspective on the drive to the Nellie Creek TH vs that of Lead King Basin. We did LKB this past weekend and while we got through without any banging, dents or other damage, it made for a long 80 minutes getting in & out.

We were going to be heading to the Lake City area this coming weekend, and I'd love to hear about the time it takes most people to drive Nellie Creek, your vehicle, and any similarities/differences between the two areas.

Thanks!

Creek crossings are similar, and so are some stretches of "baby head" rocks, but Nellie can get a bit more muddy or rutted in parts. The biggest difference is Nellie has tall berms that a LWB pickup may bottom out on. One trick is to top over them at an angle so your wheels are staggered when you go over. Plenty of light SUVs, even 2WD ones, make it to the top. Last I heard, the outhouse at the upper TH is closed, so plan accordingly.

We drove Nellie Creek this last weekend in a Jeep Grand Cherokee trail hawk. It took 45 minutes up and 40 minutes back. No scrapes. River crossings are not bad for now.

Did Nellie last Friday in a stock F150 Super Crew with no issues. I saw a couple of Subarus up pretty close to the TH and a stock Suburban in the parking lot. Pretty much, if you have some skills and a decently capable vehicle, you should not have any problems.
