Camping near Handies Peak

Post by LetsGoMets »

Looking for some recommendations on tent campgrounds near American Basin TH (Handies etc). First camping trip with my 15 month old. Looking for shade, clean drinking water, maybe an easy stream for him to stomp around in. Haven't been out to the area before, so much appreciated!

Mill Creek Campground.

It's a nice spot just down the road. That's where the Fall Gatherings have been held recently. I used it as a base for Redcloud/Sunshine and Handies during the 2016 gathering. $7/night

Mill Creek Campground has all of the above. I highly recommend it. There is some dispersed camping at the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch Trailhead, but it won't have drinking water and has less shade than Mill Creek.

Perfect. I'm guessing first come, first serve on sites?

Stayed at Mill Creek last year. I sign on with others. Shady, clean, and a walk back to the bridged entrance affords great views.

If you want a little less "primitive" then the Elkhorn RV resort and campground in Lake City has tent camping available (with real toilets and showers), as well as some nice camping cabins. Great place. We stayed there when I climbed Handies, Sunshine, and Redcloud.

I loved Lake City and am going back this next week.

But whats the deal with the Texas thing there? Not that it bothers me but Texas license plates and drawls abound. I asked a couple of the locals and my cabin owner(Texan) about this and they acknowledged it but said acted like they didn't know what it was about. I was like 'come on'. One of them surmised that it was because Lake City is so 'close' to Texas.?????

Its like a Twilight Zone where everyone knows something but you.
