are there lots of these giant marble hauling trucks?
is parking really tight at the Yule Creek Trailhead?
thinking hard about making a trip to Ragged as the ultimate culminator for this summer....
thanks.

I went up that road to where the mine is about three weeks ago, and I didn't see any trucks... But it was a weekend, not sure if that matters or not. The Yule Creek TH is not really a parking lot, and is just essentially space to park on the side of the road. Maybe 10-15 cars can fit there.

You can stop by the quarry office when they're open and they'll let you know where it is, but it's not something you have to really worry about. It's a small parking area but not too popular either. If its full, there's another pull off at the mouth of Mud Gulch, here: 39.041720, -107.177506. Careful though, you will cross private land between Mud Gulch and the trail head. Raggeds Wilderness is awesome! wish Chair mountain had public access...

word
looks like pretty cool access up to that anthracite pass and westward toward Ragged Mountain.

We climbed Ragged Mountain from the south when we did it. Deep Creek/Spud Pass trail and up the south ridge. The trailhead is not passable when wet, we were slipping all over the place and had to pull off. May be better to park at the bottom. The road comes off of the Kebler Pass Road just before crossing a creek (bridge) near Erikson Springs Campground.
FYI, Chair is in a Wilderness area, you can climb it. You just have to get creative with your approach and go over Ragged Peak into Buck Creek Basin from the same point we used to access Ragged Mountain. (Yes there are two Raggeds here, a Peak and Mountain). Getting in and out of Buck Creek Basin is said to get interesting and I haven't done it. Expect class 4 and a very long day. Will get around to it sometime...

I should point out that the reason why I ask is there is some internet chatter about this mine being active now and to 'look out' for these massive hauling trucks
and
that parking can be rather tight -- or you even need to walk up from the town of marble?
I find this latter thing kind of absurd -- this is an awfully remote location. can't imagine lots of folks heading up that way.
looking at the raggeds from google earth is pretty cool - very distinctive contour lines of those ridges.

Now you've got me researching...A North approach could be a pretty good time, just have to scoot your way around that one bit of private land to get to the east ridge.Chicago Transplant wrote:FYI, Chair is in a Wilderness area, you can climb it. 7mi. RT +5,500' gain, worth a shot! It must be pretty amazing to stand at the base of Chair in that Chair Creek Basin/Amphitheater...

so hold the phone -- are there a bunch of cabins on the west side of ragged mountains? throughout this whole area?
I'm contemplating car camping -- somewhere west there -- and then just hitting ragged hard
possibly even scouting out the area north of marble on arrival day -- look cool up there

If you hike Ragged Peak from the South, like Chicago Transplant recommended, Munsey Creek Rd is on USFS land, so shouldn't be a problem. My previous image shows the patchwork of private land (cabins) just north of the Chair Mtn. Re: What's the story with CO Road #3 south from Marble, CO ?
We drove up the road to the mine last Sat. (7/7) morning. The lower TH pullout was full and the upper pullout TH was half full. There was fresh blocks of marble sitting by the quarry office, stamped with the company name. Also in the quarry office parking lot was a couple of semi trailer trucks. The public parking lot across from the quarry office was almost full, mostly with pickup truck/trailer combos for ATV riders.
