Over the past weekend, while I drove the road to the Cyclone Creek TH (past the Shavano campground) on CR 240, I came across this Pathfinder. I was up this same road in early July, and it was there at that time too, but I think the windows were still in good shape.
And I don't recall seeing the forest service sticker on the side of it either. Plates are gone from the vehicle. Maybe stolen and ditched?? Anyway, it's too bad it will likely be left to the FS to get it out of there. Or maybe they won't??

We noticed it as well when we drove by on the 4th of July this year. Like you stated, it had yet to be vandalized at that time. Be interesting to find out the story behind this one.

Once again, hiking and 'shrooms don't mix.
Hey man, when something is like, disrupting the vibes, it's gotta go. The Pathfinder was jamming up the pathfinding vibes, ya feel?
"The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth, the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need – if only we had the eyes to see." -Ed Abbey
"I get scared sometimes—lots of times—but it's not bad. You know? I feel close to myself. When I'm out there at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving, my skin and my fingernails, everything, it's like I'm full of electricity and I'm glowing in the dark—I'm on fire almost—I'm burning away into nothing—but it doesn't matter because I know exactly who I am." from The Things They Carried
Another one stuck. And a couple years ago, someone got a Suzuki stuck in a muddy rut. They tried to winch it out, and it got torn in half. So they took the plates and left the rest.

In a spot like that four wheel drive enables you to get all four wheels thoroughly buried instead of just two.
As for that Suzuki, unless they also rendered the VIN illegible, they will still probably get billed for the removal.

Yeah, that was my thought about these stories. Even without plates, the VIN will trace back to the owner. Unless it was stolen and taken for joy ride in the back country. But then why take the plates?
I passed a broken down pickup on my way to the Huron Peak 4WD trail head. Broke one of it's ball joints. Fortunately, there was room to get around it. After summiting Huron it was still there on the way out, but I did pass a tow truck that was probably going to pull it out.
